"The Pantaneiro is a breed of horse originating from the Pantanal, Brazil. A descendant of the Spanish colonial horse, it is mainly used for working livestock in its region of settlement, which is partially flooded for part of the year. Having had a studbook since 1972 and a selection organization, the Pantaneiro forms a rather common breed, although not very widespread.
In the 20th century, the breed was crossed with the Anglo-Arab, the Thoroughbred and the Arabian, which modified its conformation and its beauty. In 1988, a census counted the presence of at least 10,000 Pantaneiro horses throughout Brazil. The Pantaneiro is linked to the group of Spanish colonial horses, or to that of the Iberian horse."
