The Sandalwood Pony is a breed of small horse originating from Indonesia, on the Sumba and Sumbawa Islands. The Sandalwood pony is one of the finest in the country, partly due to the great amount of Arabian blood. They make suitable children's ponies, and have been exported to Australia for this purpose. They have also been exported to other Southeast Asian countries for use as racing ponies.

The Sandalwood is used for light draft, pack, farm, and riding work. They are especially popular in horse racing, both on the flat and in harness. They are also used in the bareback races held on the islands, which are often over 4.8 km long.

The origin of this breed dates back to 1975 and results from the crossing between the local Sandel pony and the Thoroughbred, which gave the intermediate breed of Sumbar Sandel Arab. The objective was a racing horse measuring over 1.52 m and adapted to the local climate. The Sumbar-Sandel-Arab mares are then re-crossed with Thoroughbred stallions, giving the Kuda-Pacu . His studbook was opened in 1995. In Jakarta, the majority of racehorses (in 2013) were G3 or G4, meaning they are in the 3rd or 4th generation of crosses.

The Java is a breed of pony originating from the island of Java, Indonesia. Belonging to the group of Southeast Asian ponies, it descends from Mongolian and Chinese horses. It is mainly used for traction. The origin of the breed seems very ancient, with an influence of the Mongolian horse and Chinese breeds on the local livestock. The first Mongol horses arrived on this island as diplomatic gifts in the 7th century. Chinese horses were introduced in the 13th century.

The Dutch East India Company played a role in the development of many Indonesian horse breeds by brigging Oriental horses, Arabian and Barbe, which were imported.
